New page

This page states what the rest of the edition rests on. It is not a bibliography; that is separate. It accounts for which sources were read and which were not, what each unread source carries on its page and what carries it instead, which versions of Lean and of its documentation the pages describe, and what remains open.

The short version, before the detail. What the pages say about Lean rests on Lean itself, run on every fragment shown, and on Lean's own documentation and source, read in the versions the citations name. The edition cites 277 distinct works in 501 citations. Of these works, 258 were opened and read and 19 were not. None of the 19 carries a claim about Lean: each gives a date, a title, a venue, an attribution or a classical result, and each such claim rests as well on a bibliographic record, an abstract, or a source that was read.

What the edition rests on
Every citation falls in one of four classes. The pages add a fifth kind of evidence of their own, Lean's output.

class !! works !! citations !! not read
Lean's output, from running Lean 4.34.1 || colspan="3" | 214 fragments of Lean on 51 pages, and 111 blocks of what Lean printed

Lean's output. The content pages show 214 fragments of Lean code, on 51 pages. Of these, 213 are compiled with Lean 4.34.1, each on its own or, where it continues an earlier fragment on the same page, together with the fragments before it (40 do so), and 52 of the compiled fragments are meant to be refused; their pages quote the error. One uses Mathlib, the community's library, and is shown without being compiled; its page says so. Output that a page quotes, from <code>#eval</code>, <code>#check</code>, <code>#print axioms</code> or an error, is the output Lean 4.34.1 printed, copied and not recalled; 111 such passages are set apart in blocks of their own. On 14 October 2026 every compiled fragment behaved as its page says: those meant to be accepted were accepted, and those meant to be refused were refused. A reader with Lean 4.34.1 can repeat each check.

Lean's documentation and source. There are 114 works, all read: 52 parts of The Lean Language Reference, 39 files, directories and descriptions of Lean's source and of tools that work with it, and 23 other documents, among them Theorem Proving in Lean 4, Functional Programming in Lean and the community's textbooks. The Foundations and System pages draw on them for what they say about how Lean works, and show much of it in Lean's output.

Papers and books. There are 86 works: the papers on type theory and its history behind the Foundations and History pages, the papers that describe Lean, and the papers of the projects described under Applications. Of these, 68 were read, in whole or in the parts cited, and 18 were not; they are listed below.

Project pages and announcements. There are 64 works, all read: project sites and descriptions, blog posts, lists of awards, roadmaps and announcements. Many of them change over time; see the known gaps below.

Press and encyclopedias. There are 13 works: entries of the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy and of the nLab, articles in Quanta Magazine and Nature, and a record of the Mathematics Genealogy Project. One, the Nature article, was read in part.

Versions
Lean. The pages describe Lean 4.34.1. Every fragment is compiled with it, and every quoted output is its output. Lean 4.34.1 was published on 24 September 2026, ten days after 4.34.0; Lean 4.35.0 followed on 12 October 2026. Citations of Lean's source name the tag v4.34.1 (33 citations do), so that what they describe is the code that was run.

The reference manual. The Lean Language Reference is published in editions numbered by version. The edition for 4.34.0 states that it covers Lean version 4.34.0, and there is no edition for 4.34.1. Most pages cite the edition for 4.34.0: 40 of its parts, in 114 citations on 45 pages. Six explainers, What a proof assistant does, Checking instead of convincing, Types as specifications, Why there is no type of all types, What the axioms are and Two kinds of equality, cite the edition for 4.35.0, which was the newest when they were read.

The two editions differ. To find out where, the eight chapters and sections cited in the edition for 4.35.0 were compared with their text in the edition for 4.34.0. Five read the same, apart from section numbers and the label of a marginal note: "Introduction", "The Type System", "Propositions", "Universes" and "Subtypes". "Finite Natural Numbers" differs in the signature of one library function. "Axioms" and "Validating a Lean Proof" differ in substance. Lean 4.35.0 removed the axiom <code>Lean.trustCompiler</code> and the machinery around it, so the edition for 4.34.0 lists seven standard axioms, three of which record trust in Lean's compiler, and the edition for 4.35.0 lists four. In Lean 4.34.1 the axiom still exists, and a proof by native evaluation already depends on an axiom of its own, whose name contains <code>_native</code>:

<pre class="lean" style="background: #f8f9fa; border: 1px solid #c8ccd1; padding: 0.6em; margin: 0.3em 0; font-size: 0.85em; line-height: 1.35; overflow-x: auto; white-space: pre;">
#check Lean.trustCompiler

theorem two_plus_two : 2 + 2 = 4 := by native_decide
#print axioms two_plus_two
</pre>

Lean 4.34.1 prints:

<pre class="lean-output" style="background: #ffffff; border: 1px dashed #a2a9b1; padding: 0.6em; margin: 0.3em 0; font-size: 0.85em; line-height: 1.35; overflow-x: auto; white-space: pre;">
Lean.trustCompiler : True
'two_plus_two' depends on axioms: [two_plus_two._native.native_decide.ax_1_1]
</pre>

None of the six explainers relies on the difference. What they take from the two chapters, the three axioms known to be consistent, <code>sorryAx</code>, and the axioms with <code>_native</code> in their names, holds in Lean 4.34.1 as in 4.35.0.

The edition for 4.35.0 also inserts a chapter, "The vcgen tactic", as chapter 17, and adds a twenty-sixth, so its chapters from 17 on are numbered one higher than in the edition for 4.34.0. A section number given on a page belongs to the edition that page cites.

Some citations use an address marked "latest", which always shows the newest edition (4 citations in all): the manual's list of versions and its notes for Lean 4.22.0, on Lean since 2023 and in the chronology, and the documentation of Agda, on What a proof assistant does. What those addresses show will change. The same notes for Lean 4.22.0 are also cited, in the edition for 4.34.0, on The compiler and runtime.

The books. Theorem Proving in Lean 4 states that it assumes Lean 4.33.0, and the code of Functional Programming in Lean is tested with Lean 4.33.0.<ref name="fpil">David Thrane Christiansen, Functional Programming in Lean, front page. Every output the pages show is that of Lean 4.34.1.

Two further works were read for one page and cited from their records on another. Hurkens's "A simplification of Girard's paradox" (1995) was read, in a copy on a university site, for Universes and Prop, and is cited on Martin-Löf type theory for its date. Coquand and Huet's "The calculus of constructions" (1988) was read, in a scan of the published article, for Universes and Prop, and is cited on The Calculus of Constructions for its journal and year.

What this costs. Eleven of the unread works are cited on the History pages, for dates, venues and attributions; the others support the history of an idea, or a classical result, on explainers and technical pages. The sharpest cost is on Inductive types and recursors: its account of why the Calculus of Constructions was extended with inductive definitions rests on the abstract of Paulin-Mohring's paper, not on the paper. The next is on Metavariables and unification, where Goldfarb's result is stated as Miller reports it.

Read in part, or in another copy
* The Nature article of 2021 was read in its headline, summary and first paragraph; the rest is behind a paywall.
* Carneiro's paper on Lean4Lean was read in its arXiv text: version 2 for Terms, types and judgments, Inductive types and recursors and Definitional equality, version 3 for the other pages that cite it. The pages that cite the version published in 2026 read the arXiv text as well.
* Some papers were read in copies held elsewhere than their publishers: Hurkens (1995) and Coquand and Huet (1988), for Universes and Prop, on university sites; Milner's paper of 1978 on type polymorphism, for LCF and the tactic idea, in a course archive, in its opening pages; Abel and Coquand's paper on normalisation, for Definitional equality, in its arXiv source.
* De Bruijn's survey of Automath, his paper of 1970 and van Benthem Jutting's book of 1979 were read in scans with machine-read text, the paper of 1970 in its opening pages; de Bruijn's paper of 1972 on nameless dummies was read in its first two pages.
* The ACM's own pages refused automated access. The Turing Award citation on LCF and the tactic idea is quoted from the announcement forwarded to the TYPES mailing list, and the software award named on The Calculus of Constructions rests on the Rocq site and on search results that showed the ACM's announcement.

The rules the edition followed
* No citation from memory. Every work cited was checked: by opening it, or, for the works listed above as not read, through its bibliographic record. A detail that could not be checked was left out.
* Short quotations. Sources are paraphrased. The rule was to quote at most one short passage, of 25 words or fewer, from any one source on a page, in quotation marks and with its citation; Lean's own documentation and source, published under the Apache License, are quoted a little more freely. No quotation in the prose of the content pages is longer than 25 words.
* Every Lean fragment compiled. Each fragment is compiled with Lean 4.34.1, and each one meant to fail is checked to fail, as described above.
* Recent figures dated. Figures that change, such as the size of Mathlib or the state of a project, are given as of the date on which their source was read, and the citation carries that date. In all, 92 citations carry a date of reading.
* Versions named. A citation of the manual names its edition, and a citation of Lean's source names its tag.

Known gaps
* Closed or refused. No open copy was found of Gödel (1931), Diaconescu (1975), Goodman and Myhill (1978), Goldfarb (1981) or Paulin-Mohring (1993). The Nature article is behind a paywall. The ACM refused automated access to its award pages, and the journal's copies of Curry (1934) could not be fetched.
* Undated web pages. Of the cited web pages, 21, among them project descriptions, README files, pages of the Lean Kernel Arena and pages of Lean's API documentation, have neither a version nor a date of reading in their citations. They describe things that change, and the citation does not say which state of the page was read.
* Addresses marked "latest". The citations at such addresses, described under Versions, will show other text as Lean moves on.
* Two editions of the manual. Six explainers cite the edition for 4.35.0 while the pages describe 4.34.1. The comparison above found no claim that depends on the difference, but the citations do not name the version described.
* Two versions of one paper. Carneiro's Lean4Lean paper was read in two versions of its arXiv text, and is cited both in that form and in its published form.
* Forms of citation. One work is sometimes cited in different forms on different pages. The Bibliography gives one form for each and notes the differences that matter.

What would close the gaps
For the closed papers. Read the five papers in a library, and the Nature article in full. Each would confirm a date or an attribution. None would change what the pages say about Lean.

For the versions. Cite the edition for 4.34.0 on the six explainers, and an edition by number in place of each address marked "latest", so that every citation of the manual names the version the pages describe. Read Lean4Lean once, in one version, for every page that cites it.

For the web pages. Give each undated citation of a changing page the date on which it was read, or a versioned address where one exists.
