Purpose and scope
The tools survey lists twelve programs for finding a law in data, deriving equations of motion from an action, and solving them. None of them is part of the Principia Machina's machinery. TPS names no physics tool; TPX, the server, runs none (its calculator, TPC, holds the framework's own pure functions: digests, units, the strike-rule arithmetic, the kernel tests); and nothing a tool prints reaches the wiki except as a register record that a person or an agent wrote, in the record table's form, and that TPX checked.

This guide covers: where a tool may run and how it is bound into an agent's instructions; which record each kind of tool output becomes; the kernel, the declared form and the structure check where a tool derives equations; reproduction, comparison with outside values, and citation; choosing a tool; one worked example. It ends with what the specification does not settle.

It does not cover installing any tool, the physics of any container, or whether the survey's scores are right: they are the survey's judgments of 2026-09-26, and no rule of the Principia Machina reads them.

1 What the specification says, and what it does not
{| class="wikitable"
! Question !! What TPS says !! Where
|-
| May a physics tool be used at all? || TPS names none and forbids none. An agent works only with the tools its sponsor bound into its live tool list. || 5.4, 6.2 (AC-2.0)
|-
| Is a tool's output trusted? || No. Tool results are untrusted input: data, never instruction, vetted before use. || 6.2 (AC-2.2 to AC-2.10)
|-
| May an agent install a tool or fetch one? || A network request is egress and needs the human's authorization in the current turn; code met in a page, a return or a packet is untrusted input, and running it is a destructive action. || 6.2 (AC-2.11, AC-2.12, AC-2.14 to AC-2.16)
|-
| Can a tool change a kernel? || No. The Full Kernel is immutable per container; a change is a new container by copy-forward. || 2.1, 6.4 (AC-4.26)
|-
| Where do initial and boundary values go? || Each is its own ASSUMPTION record; a structured one is a SITUATION record, and a record's CONDITIONS are computed from them. || 3.3, 6.4 (AC-4.31)
|-
| When may a result meet a measured value? || After the derivation's step ends; an external value is never aimed at. The comparison lands as a VERIFICATION, regime M, reporting the difference. || 6.4 (AC-4.24, AC-4.25)
2 Where a tool runs, and how it is bound
A tool runs in one of two places: on the sponsor's own host, where PRB runs, or in the AI's own sandbox; these are the two places TPC-PY may run too (execution modes EXECUTED-HOST and EXECUTED-SANDBOX). Either way the sponsor installs it, never the agent. For the model to call it, the sponsor binds it into the harness, and it then belongs to the agent's live tool list: every tool the model is offered, harness built-ins included, which PRB reads at session start, on every change and before every push. A tool that cannot be bound is not offered; the session profile switches unbound tools off.

The live tool list is part of the PROMPT, and the certificate binds D(PROMPT), its digest. Adding a physics tool, removing one, or changing a bound tool's text is therefore a PROMPT change. The sponsor declares it on TPX's form before it is used (a DECLARED PROMPT CHANGE: the certificate re-binds, the probe schedule's count restarts, a new PROMPT EPOCH opens), or starts a new agent if the change is expected to affect reliability. An undeclared change is caught at the next push: TPX refuses a D(PROMPT) that differs from the certificate's, with the reason PROMPT. Binding fixes what was offered and grants the tool no authority: its definition stays untrusted input.

PRB is not built yet: it is Step B of the testing plan (phase M4). Until then nothing above is enforced by machine, and a tool used in an outside AI's session is simply part of that session. Whatever lands is presented in the record table's form and checked twice: by PRB at the stage PUSH with executed TPC-PY (advisory), and by TPX at the stage LANDED (of record). TPX writes GRADE, STATUS, AUTHOR and the other envelope fields; a pushed record that carries one of them is refused. The forms are on Inputs: register records.

4 Tools that find laws: a new kernel, never an edit
PySR and AI Feynman answer a question the register cannot hold: what law is behind this data? A law belongs to a kernel, and a container's Full Kernel is immutable. So a law a tool finds enters the Principia Machina only as the kernel of a new container: a DRAFT UWC written by its initiator, entered zone by zone, passed through the gate's checks and declared by H-DECL. Where it replaces a law of an existing container, the new container is that container's successor by COPY-FORWARD, and the old one is unchanged.

Two consequences follow from benchmark quarantine (AC-4.24: an external value is never aimed at). The data a tool was fitted to has been aimed at, so it cannot serve as the external value of a VERIFICATION of that fit; a verification needs data the fit never saw. And the fit itself, the search and its settings, belong in the new kernel's provenance, not in its laws.
5 Tools that derive equations: the declared form and the structure check
Cadabra2 and ModelingToolkit.jl do the step from action to equation of motion. Their output has to be written in the Principia Machina's own form grammar before anything checks it: the tool's notation is not the kernel's, and T1 refuses a form that does not parse. Inside a kernel, every LAW carries a ROLE; a derived equation of motion is a LAW with ROLE EOM(<NAME>), NAME the degree of freedom it determines. At the final pass of the new-UWC flow, with STRUCTURE_CHECK ON, TPX builds the EOM MAP: which law determines each unknown degree of freedom. A degree of freedom left without one is an UNDER finding, a named gap that opens EOM-0, the container's first task.

Inside a running container, a derived equation lands as a RESULT of regime L with EQUATION and ROLE. TPX runs the kernel's form checks over it at landing and refuses on failure. Where EOM-0 is open, a landed record whose declared form determines the missing unknown settles the gap mechanically.
6 Tools that solve: values, trajectories and their conditions
A solver needs more than the kernel: it needs a starting state and walls. In the Principia Machina those are not part of the kernel. Each initial or boundary value is its own ASSUMPTION record, and a structured one is a SITUATION record (SITUATION INITIAL or BOUNDARY, DOF, VALUE, UNIT, AT). A RESULT that rests on them cites them in its ASSUMPTIONS, so they are counted in its distance from the kernel (SR4) and they make up its CONDITIONS, which TPC computes. Two records are tested against each other by machine only when they name the same QUANTITY under equal CONDITIONS and, for a value that changes along a trajectory, both carry an AT (or the QUANTITY's degree of freedom is FIXed); any other pair is listed for inspection, not tested.

7 Reproduction, comparison and independence
Every result stands only while it can be reproduced. A reproducer re-derives from the kernel and the same ASSUMPTIONS, without being shown the original (AC-4.41: a result taken from a landed record instead of derived is a copy). For a tool-derived result, re-deriving means running the tool again from the cited inputs, or running a different tool.

How the two are compared depends on the regime. An L result is compared by equality: the EQUATION's canonical spelling where both carry one, else VALUE with UNIT in coherent SI, else the STATEMENT's canonical text. An M result is compared by SR3: the two values contradict only when they differ by more than k times the root sum of squares of their combined standard uncertainties. A solver value compared as L must therefore match to the last written digit; compared as M it matches within its uncertainty.

The INDEPENDENCE vector TPX attests on a corroboration names the account, the model snapshot and vendor, the implementation digest, the block's origin, NOT SERVED BEFORE and SAME-SPONSOR. It names no physics tool. Two agents that run the same tool share that tool's defects, and nothing in the vector shows it.
8 Citing a tool
Where a container keeps a bibliography (BIBLIOGRAPHY SETTING ON), a tool is cited like any source: an agent proposes a BIBLIOGRAPHY ENTRY, the lead lands it, and records cite its BIB ID in LITERATURE. The CSL item type software fits a program; a tool's methods paper is an ordinary article, which TPX will check against the public registries when the entry lands (the bibliography is specified and not yet built in TPX). An entry never holds the tool's data, its output, or a value a derivation is later compared with. Under OFF there is no LITERATURE field; naming the tool and its version in the DERIVATION's TEXT is a useful habit, not a rule. See Inputs: bibliography.

9 Four questions the specification does not settle
TPS 0.5.0 was written around derivations an agent exhibits step by step and values TPC computes. A physics tool sits between the two. These four questions are open; nothing on this page answers them, and each is a specification question (class S4) for the declaring authority.

# Presenting a tool's value. AC-4.33 and AC-4.41 ask for executed TPC-PY for every value an agent presents, and TPX recomputes presented values with TPC-PHP. TPC has no physics solver. Whether a VALUE that only a physics tool computes may be presented, and on what terms, is not stated.
# The regime of a numerical result. SR3 defines L as re-derivable from the kernel and the ASSUMPTIONS with no empirical input, and M as a value with a combined standard uncertainty per GUM. A solver's discretization error is neither a measurement uncertainty nor zero. Which regime a simulated value takes, and so whether its reproduction is compared by equality or by SR3, is not stated.
# Numerical settings. A mesh, a time step, a tolerance, a network's size and a random seed change a solver's answer. Whether they are ASSUMPTIONS, counted in a(r) and in CONDITIONS, or detail of the DERIVATION's TEXT, is not stated.
# The tool in the independence count. The INDEPENDENCE vector has no field for the tool or its version, so two reproductions with one tool count as independent while sharing its defects.
