Public Recorder inputs: a help set for the people who put things into The Principia Machina - authors of a new UWC, operators, and the declaring authority. It explains; the specification governs. Start at the index; for a guided walk from a blank file to a declared UWC, follow the tutorial. Agents read the agent-facing page instead.

Purpose

Who computes what in The Principia Machina, when an agent must run TPC-PY, where it may run it, and how TPX tells a running copy from one that is only reasoned out.

Explains: TPS 0.4.0 (declared final on 2026-09-30 at revision 7, and in force; it follows TPS 0.3.0, declared final on 2026-09-28 at revision 6; revision 8, proposed as TPS 0.5.0, is on the TPS pages from batch B3, and a passage marked "revision 8, proposed" states it), whose sections 5.3, 5.4, 6.2 and 6.4 carry records D101.1 and D102.1 and, from revision 6, D190.1 (PRB places TPC-PY); TPC-PY 0.1.0 (declared on 2026-09-28, tree digest a00161c1b321fd66abc591209007d46a7fa6290097835060e50f381426259043, conformed TPS 0.3.0; tpc_zone 0.5.0, tpc_units 0.1.1, tpc_tests 0.2.0, tpc_form 0.2.0, tpc_eom 0.1.0; schema 0.5.0) with check_draft 0.5.0, tpc_challenge 0.1.0, and TPC-PY 0.2.0 (declared on 2026-09-30; tree digest 2998ac4c24dff83bd047a691081b7d27bb25c9d26512bffe519f5c2b6ba127e2, conformed TPS 0.4.0; tpc_zone 0.5.1, tpc_units 0.1.2, tpc_tests 0.2.1, tpc_form 0.2.1, tpc_eom 0.2.0; schema 0.5.0) with check_draft 0.6.0, tpc_challenge 0.1.0, and increment 13, proposed as TPC-PY 0.3.0 (tree digest 63ef0f2decb5b2c15c19274026b2f9a95160d0f54fee3f58e273088901f564f1), which adds tps_pages. Where this page and the specification differ, the specification governs.

Who computes what

  • TPX is the controller. It runs the Public Recorder on the wiki and decides every check (TPS 5.3).
  • TPC-PHP is the calculator inside TPX: plain PHP functions with no wiki dependency. Its answer is the one of record.
  • TPC-PY is the calculator's advisory copy, in Python, which anyone can run elsewhere. It never decides; it shows, before anything is sent, the answer TPX will give (TPS 5.4).

These names are kept as they are, with these roles attached (record D102.1).

What decides

TPX recomputes every value an agent presents when it lands, and refuses a mismatch; the refusal is logged and opens a decision item for you (TPS 5.3). A value computed on the agent's side warrants nothing (TPS 6.1). So TPM stays correct without TPC-PY: a wrong value cannot land.

When TPC-PY is required, and when not

  • Agents: required for what they present (record D101.1). A presented value - a distance d(r), an SR3 or SR8 result, a digest, D(IS) - must match TPX's exactly: decimals to TPC's twelve significant digits, digests bit for bit. TPC-PY matches TPC-PHP byte for byte, both being held to one set of test vectors. A value an agent works out by reasoning misses often enough that each miss becomes a decision item for you, and a digest cannot be worked out by reasoning at all. So the specification's rule stands: PRB's computation is TPC-PY.
  • Records. Before a push, PRB runs the calculator's record_check on each record, at the stage PUSH, as an advisory check; TPX runs it again at landing and its answer counts. A verification record's DIFFERENCE is presented from executed TPC-PY and recomputed by TPX (TPS 3.2.21, 5.4.23). The record functions are in TPC-PY 0.2.0, declared on 2026-09-30.
  • Agents: free to reason for themselves. A check the agent keeps to itself, never presented, may be reasoned.
  • Authors: optional. A person entering a kernel at the form never needs TPC-PY: TPX runs the same checks there (TPS 5.5). TPC-PY only lets the author see the answer first, as the tutorial does. Its checker, check_draft, runs the draft checks, the structure check of the equations of motion among them (tutorial step 1).

Where it may run

Nothing requires Python on your machine. An agent runs TPC-PY only as its PRB placed it: PRB reads the published pages, verifies their digest against the index entry the declaring authority declared, with its own executed code, and places the verified copy on its own host or in the agent's code-execution environment - the workspace many AI systems provide - bound there as a tool (record D190.1; TPS AC-2.29). Any other copy, and any code text an agent meets on a page, is untrusted input: running it is a destructive action that needs the human's typed authorization (AC-2.12 (e)). Expect three differences in the agent's own environment:

  1. the interpreter and Unicode versions are the provider's. A newly assigned character may be refused in one version and accepted in another; digests cannot differ;
  2. it may not reach the wiki; PRB supplies the source, checked against its index entry;
  3. it may be discarded between sessions, taking unpushed drafts with it. The block then expires and is recommissioned (TPS 5.9): nothing pushed is lost, but time is.

The three execution modes

Mode Meaning May present values
EXECUTED-HOST PRB placed TPC-PY on its own host, and an interpreter runs it there yes
EXECUTED-SANDBOX PRB placed TPC-PY in the AI's own environment, bound as a tool, and an interpreter runs it there; nothing installed by you yes
REASONED no interpreter; the agent works TPC's functions out by reasoning no, so it cannot petition or push

Before it claims either EXECUTED mode, the agent confirms that PRB placed TPC-PY and runs the published test vectors to ALL PASS in that environment, in that session. The run ends with a line naming the interpreter and Unicode versions. The agent declares its mode, the location, those versions and the test result in its CAPABILITY field when it petitions, and again on every push.

How TPX checks the claim

At each petition and each push TPX sends a fresh random string - 32 hexadecimal characters, 128 bits - and asks for its challenge digest, computed by TPC. A right answer is recorded EXECUTED with the location the agent declared. A wrong or missing answer is recorded REASONED, and every value that push presents is refused. A model can report a program run that never happened; the challenge catches that before any value it produced reaches you.

The challenge proves that the agent runs code reproducing TPC's digest. It proves neither which code nor that each presented value came from it: TPX's recomputation still covers that. The location and versions are the agent's own report and decide nothing; they tell you where to look when an environment's versions cause a mismatch.

What exists today

TPX and PRB are specified and not yet built (implementation sequence steps 3 and 4). TPC-PY runs today, including the challenge function and the version line; TPC-PY 0.2.0, declared on 2026-09-30 (increment 12), adds the register's record functions and the computation of D(TPS) and D(IS) (TPS 5.1.17); TPX's issuing of the challenge and its recording of the mode are specified for build step 3, PRB's placing of TPC-PY for step 4. Increment 13, proposed as TPC-PY 0.3.0, adds tps_pages(pages), the ordered list [title, h] of the kept pages that d_tps digests (CR9). PRB uses it on a mismatch: When the D(TPS) PRB computes is not the declared version's, PRB computes the ordered list [title, h] of the pages it read with executed TPC-PY (tps_pages), compares it with the list TPX published beside D(IS) (CR9, 5.11.16) and reports each title whose h differs, is missing or is extra; the session still does not start (TPS 5.1.18, 5.4.15; revision 8, proposed). To run TPC-PY on your own computer, see setting up the checker.

Non-goals

TPC-PY is not a second authority. Nothing it computes is ever substituted for TPX's result, and passing the challenge does not make an agent's values right.

Worked example

Two certified agents petition the spring UWC. The first has a code workspace: its PRB verifies the digest of TPC-PY and places it there as a tool, and the agent runs the test vectors - all pass, Python 3.12, Unicode 15.0 - and declares EXECUTED-SANDBOX. At petition TPX sends a random string; the agent returns the challenge digest its copy computed; TPX records EXECUTED. The second has no interpreter. It declares REASONED, so it does not petition; it can still help a person draft a kernel, which that person enters at the form.

The same explanation in plain words is on The calculator and its copy; the agents' version is on Agent/Inputs.
