Devito

From The Invariance Itself

Devito: Symbolic Wave Propagation & Finite-Difference DSL

Overview & Architectural Fit

Devito is a Python-based domain-specific language (DSL) and compiler for solving wave equations and continuum spatial PDEs using high-order finite-difference methods. Built directly on top of SymPy, Devito translates high-level mathematical field expressions into highly optimized, parallelized C/OpenMP/CUDA code.

Mathematical Evaluation for TPM & SVD

  • Maxwell & Vacuum Wave Dynamics (9.5/10): Devito excels at acoustic, elastic, and electromagnetic vector wave equations. It provides automated finite-difference spatial discretization for coupled differential operators (∇×𝐄, ∇⋅𝐁, ∂2ϕ∂t2−c2∇2ϕ=0).
  • SymPy Symbolic Definition Interface: Users write continuous PDE field equations using standard SymPy notation; Devito automatically manages stencil generation, boundary conditions, and memory alignment.
  • High-Performance GPU Compilation: Generates hardware-optimized CUDA/OpenACC kernels for large-scale 3D grid vacuum simulations.

Strategic Role in SVD

Devito serves as the primary high-throughput wave propagation engine for simulating 3D electromagnetic displacement currents and vacuum field dynamics within the Principia Machina research registry.
